"The MDR video production of this live concert is very well made: a good mix of close-ups, wide shots, blends of orchestra, soloists, choir, and a few scenic shots of the packed Thomaskirche. Even the booklet is lavish with essays and texts provided ... There are four-and-a-half recordings of the Christmas Oratorio with the Leipzig Thomas Choir ... But this latest recording tops all of those as the new Thomaner-and probably even boys choir-reference version of the Christmas Oratorio".

"All in all then, I found this a wonderful issue, and surely one that now rises to the top level of recommendations for this glorious work. Might I suggest, as the family settles down for its 93rd viewing of The Wizard of Oz, immersing yourself for a few hours in the glories of Bach's masterpiece, with perhaps a glass or two of a good Spätlese to keep you company? "CD der Woche: Hervorragende Sänger hat Gotthold Schwarz eingeladen - allen voran glänzt der Tenor Patrick Grahl in der Partie des Evangelisten. Seine hell strahlende Stimme erinnert ein wenig an Peter Schreier, sein Duktus ist sprechend und sanglich zugleich ... Es übt eine besondere Faszination aus, sich vorzustellen, dass diese Aufnahme 2018 am Ort der Uraufführung der sechs Kantaten entstanden ist, in Leipzig ... Die ersten Aufführungen in den Leipziger Hauptkirchen St. Thomas und St. Nikolai leitete der Thomaskantor Bach. Gotthold Schwarz ist sein 17. Nachfolger - ihm gelingt eine stimmige, sehr lebendige Interpretation".
