"The best parts of Close to the Glass work with folk and indie, much like Neon Golden. The first half of the album is undoubtedly the stronger side; a few tracks here are among the Notwist's best. "Casino" and "From One Wrong Place to the Next" are both devastatingly sad pieces ... Sadly the second half of the album is significantly weaker than the first six songs. "Seven Hour Drive" is an uninspired Pavement-style rocker that obsesses over guitar distortion and fuzz that never adds, only distracts".

"Markus Achers flade, lidt anæmiske stemme er ofte det uperfekte i The Notwists perfekte sange, som med stor sikkerhed forener teknologi med strenge og skind. Som i den fortrinlige »From One Wrong Place To The Next«, der giver mindelser om Four Tets kompositioner, men samtidig rummer den særlige the notwistske atmosfære, der er regulær vellyd, uden at det nogensinde bliver udvendighed og pynt. »Close To The Glass« er i det hele taget et af det til dato mest vellykkede og konsistente, men også tilgængelige udspil fra tyskerne".
