"My Name Is Michael Holbrook, Mika's fifth album and his first in four years, is an uneven if admirable attempt to bridge both worlds. There is the requisite Mika sheen, most aggressively found in the thumping sex anthem "Ice Cream" (think "Milkshake" by Kelis, only enjoyably naff), and the slinky and ludicrous "Dear Jealousy", which falls somewhere between Savage Garden and Steps".

"Hearing "Ice Cream", one is reminded that Mika remains one of pop music's finest craftsmen, and still one of its most underrated. My Name Is Michael Holbrook doesn't deliver a definitive personal statement on Mika's part, and the production works against his creative vision from time to time. But it does offer half a dozen undeniably catchy jams and a reminder that Mika still ranks up there with the best pop artists of our time".

"From its straightforward title to its upfront lyrical confessions, the album is steeped in the kind of honesty that makes intimacy - whether it's between two people or an artist and his audience - possible ... My Name Is Michael Holbrook is never less than witty and genuine -- and much more enjoyable than if he'd tried to fit into someone else's mold".

"There's certainly a sense he's broadened the palette here beyond those early key Seventies inspirations. All of pop is here - there are flashes of Madonna, of Ricky Martin, of Daft Punk. And yet, and yet - for all the accomplishment, there's still an air of drama school exercise, a "hey guys" ostentation about the writing and delivery of lines like "who gives a shit about tomorrow?", and the richness of the production makes it a bit like being given an entire wedding cake for dinner with cream buns for afters. It's well worth dipping in to test the fine confections, but overall there's a frustrating sense of a stupendous talent that would ironically show more if he stopped being quite so "ta-daaaa" about it".
