"Fans enthralled with Holzmair will not want to avoid this fine recital, and the interpretations of Wolf are strong; however, as a listening experience Wigmore Hall Live's Wolfgang Holzmair/Imogen Cooper: Wolf Songs is a little bit more work than a professional-grade live recording ought to be".

"Here we find treasure indeed. It is surprising in the first place that Wolf orchestrated so few of his many songs ... This disc also includes his symphonic poem Penthesilea, the only substantial orchestral work he ever achieved during his forty-plus years lifetime ... This recording is ... principally recommendable for the many lovers of Appl's singing, here to be heard at its best in repertoire which clearly suits him ideally; his diction is perfectly judged to the scale of the performances ... As a representation of Wolf's orchestral writing it leaves something to be desired, mainly on account of the recorded sound; but there is not such a wealth of competition that even then this issue deserves to be ignored. And, as usual with this company, the presentation is excellent even when it is at its most eccentric".

"Editor's choice - August 2022: What a treat to hear these selections from the Mörike-Lieder and Goethe-Lieder in full orchestral technicolour, with Appl responding in kind: Epiphanias is a particular highlight, with each of the three kings vividly characterised by Carl Steuber, and Prometheus takes on a near-Wagnerian grandeur in the composer's own orchestration. The early tone-poem Penthesilea is a substantial bonus, with the Jenaer brass having a blast in the all-guns-blazing battle-scene".

"These recitals from October 2010 focus on a second group of Mörike Lieder, and in performances of as intimate, colourful and committed as the previous volume. All are accompanied, with alert imagination, by the festival's founder-director, Sholto Kynoch".

"What a generous communicator is the vivacious Angelika Kirchschlager ... The equal partnership of voice and piano is warmly assisted by the ideal Wigmore Hall recording".

"Appl offers a fine baritone with a good range and an ability to characterise skilfully - each of the Three Kings in turn in 'Epiphanias', for instance; throughout he is acutely observant of words as well as notes ... Almost half the recording is made up of the sizable and relatively early tone-poem 'Penthesilea' ... As with the song accompaniments it receives a committed performance here under the baton of Simon Gaudenz".

"These young(ish) singers may not be what Lieder aficionados think of as Wolf specialists; but their performances are acutely sensitive to Wolf's musical nerve system".

"The team of four singers is first-rate, responsive in every way, and if anything more remarkable is the work of their pianist, Sholto Kynoch, displaying an exceptional expressive range, not only ideally agile but with the most subtle range of tone and dynamic ... Altogether an impressive achievement from an enterprising new company".

"Hugo Wolf orchestrated 24 of his songs, all of which are included on Harmonia Mundi's disc ... Dietrich Henschel gets the lion's share of the songs ... his Fischer-Dieskau-like sound has a virile strength and is managed with consistent intelligence ... Banse does offer admirable musicianship".

"The eloquent Benjamin Appl makes a good case for several of those chosen for the album. In general, the more intimate the song, the more successful the performance: his moving 'Anakreons Grab', for example, and in the lovely 'Gebet', where his light voice ... blends well with orchestrations that offer gentle cushioning to the vocal line ... These are not the most compelling performances, then, but the programming of this album will nevertheless be interesting for Wolf fans".
