"Andrew Davis has recorded The Music Makers before; this is more volatile and dramatic, almost operatic ... The BBC Symphony Chorus is on magisterial form, with fabulous dynamic and tonal variety ... Sarah Connolly matches Davis's fiery approach with the impassioned, sometimes wild urgency of her singing, and the BBC Symphony Orchestra is at once idiomatic and alluring. These qualities also illuminate The Spirit of England (1915) and bring it to vivid life ... A stimulating and satisfying release".

"Chandos's apt contribution to the centenary celebrations of the end of World War I. Sir Andrew Davis proves the ideal interpreter of these two somewhat neglected works ... I have to admit to finding The Spirit of England a more appealing work than the introspective Music Makers ... In summary, then, the new Chandos will do very well for The Spirit of England ... Through no fault of the performance".

"Sir Andrew Davis conducts Music Makers very well indeed. It's not an easy score to bring off but he presents it as a fine and coherent work. O'Shaughnessy's verses are of their time, shall we say, but Elgar works a kind of musical alchemy on them and the result is a strongly personal and very rewarding work. It's magnificently performed here and, with opulent Chandos sound presenting the music-making in the best possible light, I think I would say that, as with The Spirit of England, this now becomes the prime recommendation for this important Elgar score".

"I listened to this disc with growing apprehensions, all of them realised. So it's necessary to say that the performances of these two relatively minor choral works are quite excellent, Sir Andrew Davis and his forces, especially Sarah Connolly and Andrew Staples ... give their all and one can't imagine their being performed more nobly, to use Elgar's favourite term ... You won't hear better accounts of these two regrettable works".

"Editor's choice: There's a wholly idiomatic sensibility, collaborative zeal and unity of vision that mark out this sumptuously engineered Chandos newcomer as something rather special ... Connolly's delivery of the closing lines distils an aching intimacy not matched since Janet Baker's sublime contribution on Boult's recording ... Davis's glorious pliant conducting evinces total conviction ... Staples makes an ardent showing ... This meaty choral pairing has already given me a lot of pleasure and earns the warmest plaudits".
