"En meget omtalt version af Rossinis sidste og længste opera Guillaume Tell - den kendte historie om Wilhelm Tell blev skrevet til Pariseroperaen i 1829 og synges derfor på fransk - er nu udkommet på dvd/ bluray ... Antonio Pappano dirigerer Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, som gjaldt det liv eller død ... I titelrollen er den canadiske baryton Gerald Finley fremragende ... Svenske Malin Byström er gribende som Mathilde ... Denne indspilning ... er - for at udtrykke det på engelsk "a treat". Eller sagt på nudansk: Wauw!".

"På trods af den brillans, som Rossini afslutter sine akter med, og de lejlighedsvise stemningsfulde klange, hvor Wagner forudgribes, er der lange tunge stræk, der er kludetæppeagtigt bygget op, og som desværre ikke gavner Rossinis opera".

"Damiano Michieletto's staging has further problems ... Musically it has a lot going for it, not least the rarely performed and ambitious score itself, conducted by Antonio Pappano with his customary zeal and stylistic insight. The leading role of the Swiss patriot is delivered in sombre (if not glowering) yet dignified manner by Gerald Finley ... Fomina is vocally confident and convincingly boyish as Tell's son ... The Royal Opera Chorus and Orchestra are on top form throughout".

Monumentalen Belcanto-Bildern, die Antonio Pappano wunderbar klangbürstet. Er trägt auch die Sänger, allen voran den Schubert-lyrischen Gerald Finley als zerrissenen Tell und John Osborn als höhensicheren Tenorkraxler Arnold".

"Det finns must och övertygelse i Finleys gestaltning av den äppelträffande prickskyttan och frihetshjälten, det finns värme och beslutsamhet när Malin Byström demonstrerar Mathildes rika känsloregister ... En scenuppsättning 2015 av Damiano Michieletto ... filmad teater ... jag har svårt att ta till mig den knotige scenografin ... men man avnjuter gärna de vokala prestationerna, inte minst körinsatserna. Maestro Antonio Pappano håller stilen med RO:s orkester".

"Anyone hoping that close-up filming might reveal subtleties in the acting not evident in the theatre will be disappointed. Close-ups add to the embarrassment ... John Osborn, a fine Arnold in concert, seems out of sorts here in his big Act 4 scene, while Tell, Gerald Finley, and the Mathilde, Malin Byström, are even more obviously out of their depth ind the theatre than on record. Pappano conducts with greater grip and insight".
