"Certainly the libretto, a German translation of extracts from James Thomson's lengthy poem, has its weaknesses. But the depiction of rustic life in the score, whose musical roots stretch back to Handel's pastorals and oratorios, as well as echoing Mozart's Magic Flute, is unlike anything else in Haydn's vast output ... That gentle affection comes through clearly in Nikolaus Harnoncourt's performance, which catches the conductor at his most serene".

"Though the soloists are lesser known, they are all excellent: powerful, expressive, and sweetly in tune. Though the orchestra is the period instrument Concentus Musicis Wien, it, too, is excellent: tight, together, and colorful ... But what can explain Harnoncourt's interpretation? The slow parts are either to too slow or too fast. The fast parts are either too fast or too slow. The rhythms are usually too choppy, but sometimes they're too smooth. The balances are odd ... For some listeners, the resulting performance may be highly enlightening; for others, it may be simply weird".

"Throughout, the performance strips away a layer of what we think of as classical restraint and gives the work tremendous impact. This goes too for the soloists, who, soprano Carolyn Sampson above all, are ideal for the work ... Highly recommended, even revelatory Haydn".

"The soloists make a fine team. All do very well in their recitatives ... it's through his conducting that McCreesh really brings Haydn's music to life. He secures a vivid, stylish and colourful performance ... This recording is a signal achievement and I hope there will be more joint Anglo-Polish recordings from this source in the future".

"Spændende i klangen. Besnærende præcis i tempovalgene og formet med meget sikker hånd. Morten Schuldt-Jensens nyindspilning af Haydns "Årstiderne" har masser af klare fortrin ... Rigtig varme anbefalinger".

"There is a fine trio of soloists ... The choral singing is less satisfactory ... Otherwise, the performance displays clarity and precision: the sound articulates the complex textures scoring and highly effective vocal writing to register to delightful effect".

"BBC music choice - recording of the month: The performance matches the high standards of McCreesh's previous grand choral projects ... McCreesh revels in Haydn's masterly skills in writing for orchestra, choir and soloists ... The choir's tone is full-bodied yet never heavy ... The soloists are expertly chosen ... while McCreesh's conducting is responsive to every subtle shade within Haydn's grand spiritual vision".

"Vurdering: IRR outstanding" - "This is Herreweghe's first recording of Die Jahreszeiten ... and there is a certain freshness and vitality to it ... He has certainly assembled a splendid team of soloists for the recording ... Some of the lovelist singing here ... from the fresh and beautifully focused voice of Christina Landshamer ... A glorious musical achievement".

"Vurdering: G (Editor's choice)" - "Herreweghe and his forces do eloquent justice to the poetry, grandeur and, crucially, the sheer joy of this least solemn, most life-affirming of oratorios".

"This new recording, if not necessarily displacing René Jacobs from pole position, is certainly a match for it, and him, and Haydn".

"Editor's choice: What emphatically sets this Seasons apart from all previous recordings, whatever the language, is the scale ... The big choruses, toppled by a shining, un-wobbly soprano line, generate a visceral excitement unmatched by any rivals ... McCreesh and his massed Anglo-Polish forces have given us a Seasons that thrillingly catches both the work's bucolic exhilaration and its invocations of the sublime. And for sheer sonic splendour it's in a class of its own".
