"These two masterpieces flow effortlessly at speeds several notches faster than his 1980 recording of No 40 with a larger orchestra. Nothing is hurried, and everything has that trademark lyrical sculpting of the line ... This is Mozart perfectly in tune with our times".

"Despite the admirable music-making, then, the deficiencies of the recorded balance make it hard to recommend this disc when set alongside the Mackerras versions".

"Ensemble Appassionato is an orchestra of some 40-plus of the best French players founded by the conductor, violist, composer and arranger Mathieu Herzog to offer 'a new, elegant and accesible vision of the great orchestral masterpieces'. They certainly play with precision and verve, with a nod towards period practice in their approach to Mozart ... In fact, their approach to the first two movements of the E flat Symphony is relatively traditional ... But then, the Menuetto is suddenly fast and fierce ... All very stimulating, no doubt - but difficult to discern precisely to what end".

"One of the conductor's most irksome mannerisms is a liking for prolonging Mozart's rests".

"These are generally no-nonsense accounts, with brisk tempos of a kind favoured these days in period-instrument performances ... Impressive, if somewhat unyielding performances, and they bring out the music's intricate textures with admirable clarity".

"At root, these are modern-instrument performances that digest the historical discoveries of our time and offer a full-bodied chamber presentation ... These three performances are, in their own ways, individual, minutely considered and thus, perhaps inevitably, not to every taste ... The ensemble sound, however, is one of the glories of this set. As chamber players and therefore soloists in their own rights, the contribution of each player is palpable".

"Philippe Herreweghe and the players do this work well [No. 41], with a fine bravado in the opening ... The E flat Symphony, No. 39, lacks something in the sheer merriment of the finale, in which Herreweghe seem unwilling to let his orchestra sparkle as it can, but he is excellent in bringing out all the orchestral detail".

"Herreweghe is literal, obedient to direction ... Herreweghe's sharp intellect presents the score, positively so in the finale ... Yet again, he shies away from the vital task of probing the innermost composer".
