"Editor's choice - October 2022: On paper, this 'vast Romantic fresco' (taking its cue from a disturbed and disturbing note which Schubert penned in 1822) looks like a fanciful collage of oddments. In practice it's mesmerising, with the segue from Liszt's orchestration of Der Doppelgänger into the first movement of the Symphony casting a particularly effective spell. Degout's on top form throughout - especially in the Gothic hunting-aria from Alfonso und Estrella, which wouldn't have sounded out of place on René Jacobs's recent recording of Der Freischütz".

"Choral & song choice: Degout is convincing throughout, his expressive range spanning both ferocity and vulnerability ... The real stars, though, are the period orchestra Pygmalion. The instrumental colours glow and sparkle, and Raphaël Pichon controls blend and contrast with equal care and imagination ... This album exceeds the sum of its parts, its sympathetic, loving performances given excellent recorded sound".

"Stéphane Degout, with his resonant, finely focused baritone, has the lion's share of the vocal items. Energetically abetted by Pygmalion, he impresses euqually in the self-tormenting scenes from 'Lazarus' and 'Euryanthe' ... Sabine Devieilhe ... brings an aptly chaste, silvery tone to Ellen's 'Ave Maria' ... The album's concept is certainly provocative. Not everything works. But those who succumb to the free association of a programme inspired by Schubert's dreamscape should find much to stir and delight".
