"A radical, big-production remake of the great vocalist's music with the rhythm section from Nick Cave's Bad Seeds giving the repertoire a thick-textured, abstract blues-rock feel, while a luxurious strings section embraces the ballads ... Lady Day traditionalists may flinch, but Coming Forth By Day is a big gamble that, for the most part, pays off, and could be Wilson's best album since Travelling Miles".

"Released to coincide with Holiday's centennial in 2015, Coming Forth by Day explicitly celebrates Lady Day by drawing upon standards she sang in addition to songs she wrote, but Wilson deliberately sidesteps the conventional by hiring Nick Launay as a producer. As a result of his work with Nick Cave, Launay mastered a certain brand of spooky Americana, something that comes in handy with the Holiday catalog ... Certainly, Launay deserves credit for his painterly production, but the success of Coming Forth by Day belongs entirely to Wilson, who proves that she's an heir to Holiday's throne by never once imitating her idol".

"Cassandra Wilson is the most important jazz vocalist of the past thirty years. There. I said it. I meant it. It is out in the open ... Coming Forth By Day is a perfect recording. Wilson has left her organic roots and claimed the 21st Century in her music. The results are an ethereal musical climax to the memory of the legendary jazz vocalist Billie Holiday ... If I was to make a 21st Century Film Noir, I would use this music for the soundtrack. It is music noir. There is a pungent and sensual darkness to this recording. This is forward-thinking arranging and orchestrating that favors deep hues and dark colors ... First and foremost, Wilson summons the deep blues in this music".

"Exquisite ... Also clever, insightful and, though utterly respectful to Holiday as source and touchstone, strikingly original ... To achieve her reimagining of 11 Holiday-associated selections, Wilson assembled a remarkably diverse team ... Their alchemic blending is dense and mysterious, atavistic yet modern. Even Wilson's voice seems cast a shade darker, a degree fuller".

"It's an accomplishment that her interpretations stand strong, celebrating while re-envisioning Holiday's classics".

"The soundscapes she constructs as she turns her attentions to standards and blues associated with Holiday is her most edgy and radical departure from a classic jazz format ... Listening to 'Coming Forth by Day' is a descent into a dark sonic maelstrom, a bass-heavy swirl of instruments, tape loops and washes of strings. Wilson's husky, smoky blue vocals are blended into this mix, hauntingly evoking, yet strikingly contrasting with Holiday's original recordings ... 'Coming Forth by Day' is an adventurous and challenging recording, especially for listeners locked into their preconceptions of Holiday's music, but for those willing to take the plunge, Cassandra Wilson once again proves that a viable tradition must look forward as it looks back".
