"You might not have looked to Germany as the source of the next big opera star, but there you have it: tenor Jonas Kaufmann has reached the point where he can sing almost anything and coax beauty and even sensuousness out of it. Can big crossover albums be far off? He doesn't have quite the charisma of a Domingo, but the voice is at its breathtaking peak and seems to be well enough cared for that it could stay there a while".

"Kaufmann is a consummate artist who rethinks everything that he sings ... You can almost forgive the hooded, crooner-like tone that [he] favours when his characters are interrogating their souls. At last comes the best. Two magnificent numbers from Berlioz ... You can happily exchange a slightly uncertain opening phrase in the aria from Les Troyens for the muscular hero caught between love and duty who emerges a moment later".

"Kaufmann has always been rather good in French repertoire ... Indeed, with his slightly covered tone, I tend to prefer him in French rather than Italian roles. However, this new disc proves a mild disappointment ... Some of the finest singing on the disc comes in the duets ... Bertrand de Billy and the orchestra ... offer dutiful support. One to delight the fans".
