"Recommended: This recording is of the polychoral music of Hieronymus Prætorius ... [and] this new 2-CD set - a fairly short two CDs, it has to be admitted - will serve very well to demonstrate the reason for his contemporary fame ... The 'recommended' accolade is partly for the quality of the music, the performances, recording and presentation, and partly to celebrate the launch of the new label ... All those other recordings offer good or very good supplements to the new album from Alamire, but this is now my prime recommendation for this neglected composer. I reiterate that the quality of the music, performances, recording and presentation all add up my putting this forward for serious consideration as a Recording of the Month".

"Choral & song choice: It's the latest scrupulously researched project from Alamire, and director David Skinner has plundered Michael Praetorius's Syntagma Musicum for ideas as to how to present the music of a near-contemporary, who ... was not, in fact, related ... Skinner rings the changes, sometimes doubling a vocal line with brass, sometimes deleting voices altogether; and he holds a Danish ace up his sleeve in the guise of the Roskilde Cathedral organ ... Across the discs, Skinner contrives a glorious earful ... Nowhere does the Danish organ sound as if parachuted in ... Turn the volume to 'max' and wallow!".

"The largest motet, Decantabat populus a 20 is a text about singing praises. Despite grand forces and wide vocal ranges, the textures avoid heaviness through use of word-rhythms and sprightly polychoral exchanges ... I love the warm, unhurried grandeur His Majestys Sagbutts and Cornetts bring to this performance, and they are well balanced with the superb singers of Alamire ... I found the purely vocal performances less engaging ... Stephen Farr's performances on the magnificent organ of Roskilde Cathedral are joyful ... bring an exiting injection of colour and texture to the whole disc".
