"The Pastoral features a rumbustious peasants's dance; the Storm crackles with lightning and the end is heartfelt. There is perhaps a lack of subtlety in the more lyrical sections, but the Second Symphony is breathtakingly hard-hitting and Järvi creates the most thrilling first-movement climax since Norrington".

"The performances were evolved over a series of 'academies' interrogating every aspect of the score. His interpretive decisions nonetheless feel organic rather than didactic ... Perhaps some elements of the Eighth are a touch overbearing, bub, with a superbly-matched quartet of soloists, the finale of the Ninth punches home Schiller's message with a conviction that carries all before it".

"Recording of the month - Editor's choice: Chapeau to Jordi Savall and Le Concert des Nations. The pandemic delayed the completion of their symphony cycle but they came out fighting ... Beginning with the 'Pastoral' ... what is really nocticeable is that the strings have a really winewy, almost abrasive qualigy ... you can almost feel the rosin flying off their bows in the fiercer attacks ... The Eighth is given an exuberant reading ... And so to the Ninth ... Savall seizes it by the scruff of the neck and gives an invigorating account, one of the swiftest I've heard ... This is a very special release ... Savall's may well have just become my favourite period-instrument Beethoven cycle of them all".
