"Following Darkstar's second album (and Warp debut) News from Nowhere, the dubstep-turned-electro-pop band, lost vocalist James Buttery, reverting to their original duo lineup of Aiden Whalley and James Young. Whalley takes the reins here as the duo's vocalist, but they retain their experimental pop sound, with perhaps a little bit more emphasis on beats than on their previous effort ... " Foam Island is a curious, enjoyable album that abundantly showcases Darkstar's tendencies for experimentation as well as pop songwriting".

"Foam Island prominently features interviews with people around Huddersfield. Far from exploitation or class tourism, the clips they include are respectful, sometimes heartbreaking and other times hopeful ... Foam Island has some of Darkstar's best songs, and the tones are varied considering the downcast subject matter. "Go Natural," a slice of peppy and orchestral electro-pop, is the odd one out, while the acid-tongued "Pin Secure" recalls slinky, post-millennial R&B in its mechanical herky-jerk".
