"Celibidache: musically-probing, acoustic-scientific, cosmos-related, mystical, demanding of much rehearsal time, demanding of the musicians, uncompromising in his approach. This Mahler/Strauss coupling is new ... It's an apt if sombre pairing that is musically compelling and enlightening ... Brigitte Fassbaender was another distinguished musician prepared to pool resources with the Romanian master, to mellow fruitfulness in the case of Mahler's Kindertotenlieder. Don't expect 'beautiful singing' but do expect a deep feeling for the words ... and a nuanced expression ... As for Richard Strauss's Death and Transfiguration, this expansive (thirty-minute) performance is thrilling and spine-tingling".

"Karnéus sings with intensity and impassionad vibrato rather than with warmth and tenderness - which will be the taste of some, and not of others".

"Katarina Karnéus is at her best in one or two obvious places, and one ot two less obvious ones too, though I am not sure she is quite consistent enough to be a top choice in this most well-tilled of soil".

"Karnéus is a secure and heartfelt interpreter, but Janet Baker and Christine Schäfer ... find a few more gentle notes in Mahler's bouquet of sorrow".

"Editor's choice: Fassbaender's concentration is compelling; the voice's characteristic richness and the inherent intelligence and emotional engagement of the mezzo's approach only gain in power by the remarkable steadiness of the singing, by an apparent attempt to maintain something like a stiff upper lip ... The playing of the Munich Philharmonic throughout is a model of concentrated, sensitive support ... The Strauss is intriguing ... but it's Fassbaender's extraordinary Mahler that makes this an essential purchase".
