"Boccanegra is played by Thomas Hampson, who brings his sharp intellectual focus to bear on the contrast between the private man and the public figure, and avoids sacrificing the vocal line to the text ... Joseph Calleja, meanwhile, is outstanding as Gabriele Adorno, fully vindicating the integrity and complexity of a role that some tenors have regarded as being insufficiently starry and have refused to sing. Recommended, despite its occasional flaws".

"Hampson is, as always, a searching interpreter, aware of the meaning and possible ambiguities of every phrase he sings; but his voice is not a classic Verdi baritone ... The only principal to meet every demand of their role is Luca Pisaroni's trenchant Paolo ... The performance has a great sense of drama ... and Italian conductor Massimo Zanetti presides over a fine account of the score".

"Over all presides Abbado in what remains one of his greatest recordings, alert to every facet of the wondrous score, timing every scene, in an opera tricky to pace, to near-perfection, and in sum bringing theatrical drama into the home ... This one should now be an essential adornment to any reputable collection of Verdi".

"Vurdering: Gramophone choice" - "Performances that don't just measure up to the recorded history but shine different kinds of light on the opera ... Pisaroni delivers one of his strongest recorded performances so far ... Now, in his maturity, [Hampson] can emit a true Doge roar ... His Lieder-like sense of detail reveals the role in three dimensions with great concision and no excessive fussing with the vocal line".
